Why World Elephant Day is celebrated?

World Elephant Day is celebrated on 12th of August every year to help protect elephants for maintaining the biodiversity of rainforest. More than 65 wildlife organisations and several people around the world celebrate this day.


This day is marked by raising, awareness about the difficulty of the Elephants in the forest and also finding out possible ways to protect them. World Elephant day is firstly created to bring the world together to help elephant on 12th of August, 2012 by Bangkok and Thailand. The initative was greatly supported by the film star and Star Trek legend William Shanter who narrated the documentary "Return to the forest", a fascinating 30 minutes film about the reintroduction of captive Asian elephants to the wild.



Motive behind celebrating World Elephant Day

The motive for the first World Elephant Day was to draw attention plight of these magnificient creatures to populations & cultures all over the world.

Elephants are intelligent, family-oriented and even have good memories, yet we balance on the brink of seeing the last of this magnificient creature of the Mother Earth. By changing entire landscapes, Elephants can affect many other species, from trees to herbivore species and even predators, and perhaps their most interesting gardening method.

Forced to live their lives in isolation, in chains, treated as entertainment, tortured and tormented by cruel training practices.

Sadly, Elephants in the wild are facing great threats too. Countless elephants are brutally killed every year for their ivory by greedy poachers. The counting per year of chat of this giant elephants goes up to 35,000.



Conclusion

Elephants are also keystone of the biodiversity. Meaning that their extention could lead to the collapse of the ecosystem, which they inhabit.


We need to create & support protected areas, and support Anti-poaching & conservation areas to ensure that 30 years from now Elephant populations are thriving in the World Wild life.
