Why Hiroshima Day is celebrated?

Hiroshima day is observed annually on 6th of August. The day is reminder of the bombing attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States during World War II in 1945. On Hiroshima day, the city of Hiroshima holds the "Peace Memorial Ceremony" in front of the Memorial Cenotaph in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial park to console the victims of the Atomic bombs.


History of Hiroshima Day

After Germany surrender to the Allied forces in May 1945, the second World War continued in Asia as the Allies fought imperial Japan. The United States believed that the use of a nuclear bomb would force Japan to save millions of US casualities under the Manhattan Project, the United States created two atom bombs. The first was named as "Little boy" was to be dropped on Hiroshima, and the second one was named as "Fat Man" was to be dropped Nagasaki.





Impact of World War - II 
 
On the morning of 6th of August 1945 at 8:15 AM an American B-29 bomber dropped "Little Boy" which was of more than 9000 pound Uranium-235 over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. 

The explosion which was caused due to the bombing wiped out 90 percent of the city. The blast immediately killed nearly 80,000 people with massive infrastructural damage. And million other died later due to radiation exposure. After 3 days, on August 9 another B-29 dropped "Fat Man" on Nagasaki killing another 40,000 people. 



Side effects on Hiroshima 

After a decade, Thyroid cancer, Breast Cancer, Lung cancer and other form of Cancers were also observed at higher than normal rates. Pregnant women subjected to the bombing experienced higher rates of miscarriages and infant death. It is also responsible for the severe mental retardation. 



Significance of Hiroshima Day 

This day remind us of the devastating situation of nuclear warfare that records instances in history. During the annual Hiroshima aniversary the government reconfirms its commitment to a nuclear - free world. This day also raise the awareness about the danger of nuclear energy.

The first ceremony was held in the year 1947 by the Hiroshima Mayor Shinzo Hamai. Every year this day, people participates in "Peace Message Lantern Floating Ceremony" in the evening & write message of peace on the Lanterns & set Afloat Down the Motoyasu River.
